In just a couple of days, restaurants all over Canada will be filled with couples celebrating their love. “If last year’s numbers are any indication, restaurants should prepare for a packed house this Valentine’s Day,” writes Tessa Zuluaga of Toast, “In 2024, overall transactions at full-service restaurants saw a 41% increase...The average ticket size rose by 25%, signalling guests are willing to splurge on elevated dining experiences.”
Needless to say, your restaurant is bound to enjoy an increase in sales this Valentine’s Day. That is, of course, if you do your due diligence to make it a Valentine’s Day date destination.
Offer a special Valentine’s Day menu.
Obviously, Valentine’s Day is a day like no other. It should be treated specially. Why not introduce a prix fixe menu? It can help streamline kitchen operations while offering guests luxurious dining experiences. Consider featuring romantic appetizers such as oysters, bruschetta or heart-shaped dishes. Offer elegant entrées like filet mignon, seafood pasta or vegetarian risottos. Of course, don’t forget such decadent desserts as chocolate fondue and cheesecake.
“Make your menu extra special with themed items like heart-shaped pizza, chocolate strawberries, and more,” encourages RestoBiz, “Research shows that for 2025, of the 48 percent of Canadians who plan on dining out, 79 percent are planning on trying a new restaurant, so get ready to leave a lasting impression to maximize repeat visits.”
Create a romantic atmosphere.
There’s no question that lovebirds will be seeking much more than delicious eats on Valentine’s Day. They will want to dine within romantic confines. Ambiance is everything when you are celebrating your relationship. Transform your restaurant into a romantic haven by focusing on lighting, décor and music. Dim the lights and use candles to create a cozy, intimate venue. Play soft background music and decorate tables with roses, fairy lights or personalized love notes.
“Think outside the box when it comes to creating a romantic atmosphere in your restaurant – from subtle decorations like candles or fresh flowers, to music or even a themed photo booth where couples can take photos together,” encourages Flanagan Foodservice, “You could also consider offering ‘extra touches’ like complimentary champagne or desserts as part of their meal package.”
Encourage reservations in advance.
Get the word out that your restaurant is the place to be this Valentine’s Day! Use social media, email marketing and other methods that will connect with your eatery’s target audience. Promote online and phone bookings. Offer early bird or late-night seatings to maximize table turnover. As well, make sure to request a deposit to reduce last-minute cancellations. You may even want to consider VIP packages with premium seating, complimentary drinks or a special gift.
“Use customized booking confirmations to be in touch with guests in advance of their visit,” suggests Joy Manning of OpenTable, “This way, you can ensure they’re up-to-date on any safety regulations or policy changes they’ll need to follow. An effective yet often overlooked way to communicate with guests is to pick up the phone. If you aren’t already doing it, calling guests a few days before their reservation is a highly personal way to confirm with them.”
