In truth, you can never really be too safe. Especially since Halloween is an occasion when our young ones are running up, down and across our neighbourhood streets, it’s vital that we take extra precautions to protect them from harm.
Make sure your child is clearly visible.
We all love wearing costumes that are as authentic to the monsters and/or characters that we’re portraying. But, with “safety first” in mind, it’s wise to place some reflective tape on your child’s costume. This helps to make sure that he or she is clearly visible while walking up and down the dark streets tomorrow night.
SafeKids.org agrees. “Carry glow sticks or flashlights, use reflective tape or stickers on costumes and bags, and wear light colours to help kids see and be seen by drivers,” advises the website.
Safeguard your child’s costume.
Did you find the perfectly-sized costume for your little one? If not, don’t hesitate to make a few adjustments. If it’s a must that a mask be worn, you may want to enlarge the eye sockets so as to not impair your child’s vision. Is his or her cape too long? Shorten it to prevent it from becoming a tripping hazard.
“When selecting a costume, make sure it is the right size to prevent trips and falls,” insists SafeKids.org, “Choose face paint over masks when possible. Masks can limit children’s vision.”
Ensure your child never enters anyone’s home.
Some Halloween-lovers like to set up their homes as haunted houses on Halloween. Although it may be a treat to enjoy such spooky experiences, it’s best to teach your kids not to enter anyone’s home. Unless you are entering with them, it’s important they know that the safe bet is remaining outdoors. This is true for teenagers as well, says Life360.
“Although it may seem to be common sense, a well-mannered child or teen may not be able to resist an insistent invitation from an adult,” notes the website, “Be sure to remind your child that it is never okay to enter a stranger’s home, regardless of if it is Halloween or not. This also goes for cars, vans, and general invitations to new locations. Teaching your kid to say ‘no’ can be one of the most effective ways to keep them and their friends safe.”
Check your child’s candy.
Perhaps, the most important tip for a fun and safe Halloween is the one practiced once the trick-or-treating is all done. Be sure to check all of your child’s candy before allowing him or her to eat any of it. You want to make sure there is nothing dangerous in the bag. Naturally, you’ll also want to discard candy your child may be allergic to.
“As long as Halloween has been celebrated, parents have insisted on checking their kids’ candy – and for good reason!” notes Life360, “Any open or unsealed wrapper is a risk. Be sure to thoroughly check your child’s candy when they get on from trick-or-treating.”
